Double National

How about having a rotating Double National that changes track every year and is hosted by a single or multiple regions at each location? Track rotation done by a "luck of the draw" selection.

Double National

I think it should be held at Mid-Ohio on Labor Day Weekend using both track configurations . I like the dates because of the few Nationals late in the year and should draw a good car count.

While I like the idea of running both configurations of Mid-Ohio for such an event, let's step back and take a realistic view on the matter. Labor Day weekend is traditionally the AMA show at Mid-Ohio, which brings in tens of thousands of paying spectators. Mid-Ohio has already established a history of bumping SCCA regions off of their "traditional" weekends in favor of money making events, and who could blame them???!!!. I highly doubt that MO would consider bumping AMA from their schedule for an SCCA National.

If, for some reason, the planets do align and the date is a possibility, you are then looking at nearly $50,000 PER EVENT in track rental alone for such an event. How many regions have the ability to front over $100,000 from their treasury, before any other expenses that need to be addressed for putting on a National (or 2 Nationals in this case)? I don't suspect very many. If we're looking at $750 to $1,000 for an entry fee, such an event doesn't look too enticing any more.

Food for thought.

This is what what proposed at the Scheduling meeting by a member of the Neohio Region Trustees. This would have been a great event for the new division and give all regions a chance to share in a Double National.

Let me weigh in on a few

Let me weigh in on a few logical thoughts regarding the Double National;

This event was originally proposed (2 years ago) as a joint event between a CENdiv (at the time) region and NEDiv region as a fresh idea to what were becoming stale problems within the division, where our entrants could gain both in and out of Division points (in their respective Division) with one tow. I strongly believe in this original concept.

In my opinion, to suggest holding such an event at Grattan or Gingerman does not make sense as it's akin to NEDiv co-hosting a GLDiv event at someplace such as, say, New Hampshire Int'l Raceway. The beauty of such an inter-Division event is it's centrality to 2 seperate Divisions. And when this event would rotate, it would open up the possibility of the same inter-Division event with CENDiv (for the other side of the Division) every other year. You see how this all makes sense?

So posting a poll about which track should host such an event based on popularity, not centrality, simply misses the point.

The track poll was regarding

The track poll was regarding a double nation in GLDiv not a shared event.

If it were up to me (and it certainly isn't) we should do it at M-O as this is the only track befitting such an event. And it would draw very well.

Mid-Ohio has shown

Mid-Ohio has shown repeatedly that it does not really want any SCCA racing on their premises. If you have ever tried to schedule an event there you would know how hard it is to get a date. The ONLY date that has not changed for several years is the OVR National. That doesn't make any sense at all. I do not think a National like that would draw very well at all.

If you want a track that is favorable to SCCA and amatuer racing then look at Nelson Ledges. Most of the people that talk unfavorably about Nelsons Ledges have not been there for 5-10 years. How do I know? I ask them! When they berate the track and say how bad they think it is I ask them when the last time they were there. The majority of the time is 7 to 8 years ago. Some have never been there.

So when you talk about a track befitting a "race like that" you should not think Mid-Ohio. Think Nelson Ledges.

The track poll was regarding...

The poll was definitely about a Double National. I think you have confused many people by putting it on the website in the way you did. You definitely missed the whole point.

Sry, first reply didn't go through.

Poll closed

This poll has been open for two weeks and is now closed. The topic is still open for comments, though you have to be registered user of the web site to post comments.

Thank you to everyone who voted in this poll. I'll be the first to admit that this poll is totally unscientific. The polling feature is designed to reduce "stuffing the ballot box", though that's still possible.

I also want to make clear that this poll was not conducted at the direction of GLDiv officials. I thought it would be interesting to see what people thought about the topic and I wanted to try out the polling feature of the software we are using to build the web site.

On the other hand, I hope the division sees the value of soliciting input from the membership through this type of polling. While you, individually, may not agree with the outcome, I think this poll gives a clear picture of how people feel about the question.

any more interest in doubles being scheduled

it looks like the overall interest was quite high in a doubles national. any regions considering a double national?

or it looks like i could just stay in michigan for the 4 events needed to qualify for the runoffs, cool!
